Great Basin National Park Foundation Centennial Virtual Lecture Series: Exploring Lehman Caves’ Ancient, Mysterious Past

May 4 @ 6:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lehman Caves by learning in-depth about Great Basin National Park.

May 4: Exploring Lehman Caves Ancient, Mysterious Past

Lehman Caves’ beautiful mineral decorations…its calcite shields, stalactites, and helictites…draw the appreciation and wonder of tourists, but they also disguise much of the cave’s fascinating, geologic past. Learn about recent investigations by Dr. Louise Hose and others that reveal the cave’s age as well as new information about the geologic history of the entire area. The Southern Snake Range is an under-studied, world-class geologic laboratory, and Lehman and other caves in the region have altered what we know about the region’s ancient past.

Dr. Louise Hose has explored and studied caves throughout the world over the last 50 years. National Geographic has featured her work and her proudest achievement was placing the term “snottite” in a highly recognized, refereed journal. A retired academic geologist, she continues her cave investigations around Nevada, with a particular focus on Lehman Caves in Great Basin National Park.
