Virtual WNPA Member-Only Presentation: The Remarkable Endemism of Moths in White Sands National Park.

July 29 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Free

In honor of the 11th annual National Moth Week, join WNPA and researcher, Eric Metzler, as he presents his research that has led to the discovery of over 60 species of moths that are only found at White Sands National Park.

At first glance most of the white gypsum dunes appear bleak and devoid of animal life, however, a closer look reveals many species and subspecies of animals (vertebrates and invertebrates) that are endemic to the gypsum dunes. In the first year of his long-term study, Metzler discovered six species of moths that are new to science. For the next ten years, six additional species new to science were discovered each year. Of the 650 species documented in an area of less than 1 percent of the dunes in the national park, almost 10% are endemic in the dunes of White Sands National Park. No other single location of equal size in North America exhibits this rate of endemism.

Join us and learn about the remarkable endemism of moths in White Sands National Park.

This free event is online via Zoom but requires a reservation.* Please request a reservation below. If you need assistance, please email Caroline Lochner [email protected]. Upon registering, you will receive a link to join the presentation by video or telephone.
