Observe Beautiful Petroglyphs and Fascinating Geology at Petroglyph National Monument

Petroglyph National Monument protects more than 24 thousand petroglyphs, carved into volcanic rocks by Native Americans and Spanish settlers 400 to 700 years ago. As you walk the trails, you’ll view these intriguing creations up close and imagine the stories behind their creation. Four hiking trails ranging from 1 to 4 miles in length allow you to explore the park’s mesas and canyons at your own pace. Trails vary in difficulty, so there’s something suitable for every skill level. Be sure to stop by the visitor center to grab a trail guide before heading out.

Canyon Views at Petroglyph National Monument

For a memorable hike, head to Rinconada Canyon to view petroglyphs depicting animals, people, and geometric designs etched into the canyon walls and boulders surrounding the trail. Or check out the Boca Negra Canyon trail to experience towering rock walls covered in designs, zigzags, and swirls left behind by ancient Pueblo people.

Beyond the cultural artifacts, Petroglyph National Monument showcases the hardy native plants that have thrived in this arid climate for ages.
