City Nature Challenge Guided Hike: Volcanoes Day Use Area

The City Nature Challenge is an annual, global event that encourages people to document local biodiversity through community science, using platforms like iNaturalist.
 
This year, it runs from April 24 through April 27. You are invited to participate in several guided hikes offered by Petroglyph National Monument in partnership with the City of Albuquerque Open Space Division and the University of New Mexico Department of Biology. 
 
  • Friday, April 24 from 5:30-7:30 pm at Piedras Marcadas Canyon (no amenities. 1.9 miles roundtrip, flat and easy to walk on, no shade)
  • Saturday, April 25 from 2:00-4:00 pm at the Volcanoes Day Use Area (~2 miles roundtrip with moderate to steep inclines and loose rock)
  • Sunday, April 26 from 9:00-11:00 am at Rinconada Canyon (2.2 miles roundtrip with easy to moderate inclines, no shade)
 
For all hikes, please bring plenty of water with you. Vault toilets are available at the Volcanoes and Rinconada Canyon. Dress for the weather and wear comfortable hiking/walking shoes with good ankle support. Wear sun protection such as hats and sunscreen. Bring binoculars if you have them, they will be helpful for spotting and identifying wildlife. 
 
Since these hikes are focused on finding, identifying, and documenting wildlife, please do not bring pets along. Service animals allowed.
