Cowboys and Caracaras

Step back in time and explore the rich ranching history of Padre Island while keeping an eye out for the striking crested caracara and other birdlife along the way. This casual, ranger-led walk takes place at the historic Novillo Line Camp—the last remaining 19th-century line camp in the park—offering a unique glimpse into the island’s past and its vibrant wildlife.

Space is limited and sign-ups are required.

The walk is approximately ¾ mile round-trip and the guided portion will last for 30-45 minutes. The trail is an uneven dirt and gravel trail that is not wheelchair accessible.

You may sign up and reserve your spot starting one week before the walk date. For more information or to sign up, call the Malaquite Visitor Center at (361) 949-8068 and speak with a ranger.
