In-Person Presentation | Search & Rescue in Yosemite National Park
In 2023, nearly four million people visited Yosemite, and most of them returned home safe and sound—but not everyone. Over the past 50 years, the park has carried out roughly 8,500 search-and-rescue missions. Yosemite Search and Rescue (YOSAR) is one of the world’s premier rural and mountain rescue teams.
In this engaging talk, retired Yosemite ranger Charles “Butch” Farabee Jr draws on a fascinating collection of photographs to share stories from many of these rescues. Farabee spent nearly a decade working in the park and has written five books on the subject, including Big Walls, Swift Water: Epic Stories from Yosemite Search and Rescue, that received the National Outdoor Book Award in 2017.
