7 days in California's Mojave Desert

Experience the expansive and varied Mojave Desert landscapes of southeastern California with a road trip through Joshua Tree National Park, Mojave National Preserve, and Death Valley National Park. From towering rock formations to vast sand dunes, this seven day itinerary is packed with adventure.
Exploring Joshua Tree National Park

Southern district
Start your park journey at the Cottonwood Visitor Center before exploring the low-lying southern portion of the park. Visit Cottonwood Springs (.1 mile) and the Cholla Cactus Garden (.25 mile loop).

Rock formations and scenic hikes
Hike the Hidden Valley Trail (1 mile) to discover a natural rock-enclosed valley. For a longer trek, explore the 4-mile Lost Horse Mine Trail to see one of the best-preserved gold mines in the region.

Sunsets & stargazing
End each day with a breathtaking sunset from Jumbo Rocks Campground or Belle Campground before enjoying views of the Milky Way at night.
Exploring Mojave National Preserve

Kelso Depot & dunes
Take a scenic drive through Mojave National Preserve, stopping at Kelso Depot to learn about the area’s railroad history and desert environment. Trek up the shifting sands of the nearby Kelso Dunes (a 3-mile trail) for sweeping desert views, listening for the eerily beautiful "singing sands" phenomenon.

Explore Lava Tubes
Visit the Lava Tubes (1-mile trail) to see caves formed by ancient volcanic activity. Midday is the best time to see sunlight beams shine through the openings.

Hole-in-the-Wall trails
If looking for a fun challenge, climb up Banshee Canyon on the Hole-in-the-Wall Trail (.5 mile) and Rings Loop Trails (1.5 mile) using circular rings anchored in the canyon walls.
Discovering Death Valley National Park

Iconic landmarks and salt flats
Begin your park journey at Zabriskie Point for an unforgettable sunrise over the golden badlands. Then venture to Badwater Basin (1-mile trail to salt flat), the lowest point in North America.

Canyons and colorful landscapes
Hike through the golden-hued Golden Canyon (3 miles), which leads to Red Cathedral’s dramatic rock formations. For a more rugged adventure, trek through the polished walls of Mosaic Canyon (4 miles).

Dunes and remote views
Experience the rolling dunes of Mesquite Flat Sand Dunes (2 miles), a perfect spot for photography and exploration. For a high-elevation perspective, venture to the sacred Ubehebe Crater, (1.5 miles), a massive volcanic crater.

29 or 49 Palms
If you have an extra day, spend it in the charming town of 29 Palms taking in art galleries and murals. Or if you can't get enough of the outdoors, hike to the palm tree-studded desert oasis of Fortynine Palms, (3 miles out-and-back).
Visit Smart
Plan ahead
While Joshua Tree and Death Valley both have many campsites, including walk-ups, they can be hard to get during busier seasons. Make reservations early.
Stay informed
Always check trail conditions before you go.
Stay hydrated
The desert climate can be harsh. Carry extra water, wear sun protection, and avoid hiking in extreme midday heat.
Leave no trace
These lands hold cultural significance for Indigenous communities. Pack out all trash, stay on trails, and respect the natural beauty of the desert.
