Walk through the 18th-century Franciscan mission church, which still stands in quiet beauty in the lands where the O’odham lived for generations prior to the arrival of the Spanish. Visit the historic cemetery, convento ruins, and orchard area. Stop by the park’s traditional hornos (ovens) and garden to see plants grown during the mission era.

Enjoy the Juan Bautista de Anza National Historic Trail

Hike

Hike from Tumacácori to Tubac (4 miles one way). Follow the Santa Cruz River through mesquite bosque, an oasis in the desert. Spot wildlife like vermilion flycatchers and coatimundis along the way. Stop at the Presidio de Tubac, a Spanish colonial-era military outpost.

Final reflections and the park store

If hiking back, allow extra time and bring plenty of water. Otherwise, take the park shuttle. Spend some time by the fountain in the garden outside of the visitor center. Stop at the park store for books and handmade crafts reflecting the region’s rich history.
