Exploring Canyonlands & Black Canyon of the Gunnison

Day 1 through 2 :

Exploring Canyonlands’  Island in the Sky

Scenic viewpoints and short hikes

Begin at the Island in the Sky Visitor Center, where you can get maps and updates on trail conditions. Drive along the Island in the Sky scenic road, stopping at viewpoints like Grand View Point and Green River for stunning vistas of the canyon below.

Unforgettable views

View a spectacular sunrise at Mesa Arch (.6 mile round trip), where the rising sun framed by the arch lights up the canyon below. Then explore the overlooks and trails surrounding the colorful and mysteriously formed Upheaval Dome.

Adventurous trails

For a more immersive experience, hike the very strenuous Gooseberry Canyon Trail (4.6 miles roundtrip), which descends into the canyon. Walk the White Rim Overlook Trail (1.8 miles roundtrip) for panoramic views of the Colorado River.

Day 3 :

Exploring The Needles District

Stop at the Needles Visitor Center to learn about the unique geology of the park. If you have 4 wheel drive, take backcountry roads through this winding landscape of canyons and rock formations.

Iconic hikes and remote wilderness

Explore Chesler Park Viewpoint (5.8 miles round-trip), which leads through rock formations to a stunning open meadow. Those seeking a challenge can take on the Chesler Park Loop & Joint Trail (10.4 miles), which winds through narrow rock passages and provides some of the best views in the park.

Camping & nighttime solitude

The Needles Campground is the perfect spot for backcountry camping that is more accessible. The remote location means incredible stargazing and a peaceful night in the desert.

Day 4 through 5 :

Discovering Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

South Rim overlooks and short hikes

After making the drive from Utah, go to South Rim Visitor Center to get an introduction to this awe-inspiring park. Drive the South Rim Road, for incredible canyon views. For a short but scenic hike, try the Rim Rock Trail (1 mile).

Exploring the inner canyon and river access

Drive down East Portal Road to experience the Gunnison River. For advanced adventurers who have secured a permit in advance, tackled the Gunnison Route (permit required) down the canyon and towards the river.

Sunsets and stargazing

Wrap up your trip with a sunset at Sunset View Overlook. Black Canyon’s dark sky designation makes it one of the best places in Colorado for stargazing.

Avid and prepared climbers will want to add on at least a day to climbing technical routes at Canyonlands or try their hand at the multi-pitch routes of Black Canyon of the Gunnison for challenging climbs in unmatched settings.
