Cultural Demonstration Program - Diné Silversmith McHale Alcott

We are excited to welcome Diné Silversmith McHale Alcott to Walnut Canyon National Monument for the Cultural Demonstration Program. Join McHale from Saturday, May 23 – Monday, May 25. The purpose of the Cultural Demonstration Program is to elevate the voices of members from the traditionally associated tribes. Demonstrations allow visitors to the Flagstaff Area National Monuments the opportunity to meet Indigenous artists while they practice traditional and modern crafts. McHale will be demonstrating from 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, and from 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. on Monday at the Walnut Canyon Visitor Center.

McHale was born and raised in Arizona. His mother’s clan is Kin’yaa’aanii’ (Towering House), born for the Ash’ii’h’i Clan (Salt People). Silversmithing has been present in his life since his early childhood. When he was 10 years old, his father began to teach him how to grind stones like turquoise. He later learned from his father the different stages of making a bracelet. Throughout his life, his family including his father, mother, and grandparents have paved the way for him to become the artist he is today. McHale takes pride in passing along the knowledge and teachings of his parents and grandparents to his children and future generations.
