Hispanic Culture of San Luis Valley

Join us for a special cultural demonstration to highlight the Hispanic Culture of San Luis Valley in the park amphitheater in the Piñon Flats campground.  This event is a collaborative effort between the Great Sand Dunes and the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area.

Performances will feature music and colorful dance that connects the Hispanic cultural heritage of the local San Luis Valley and includes Mariachi San Luis, Los Vecinos Baildores, and Los Semillas de la Tierra.

Rooted in the vibrant musical traditions of Mexico, Mariachi music blends heartfelt vocals, bold harmonies, and distinctive instruments to create an atmosphere of joy, pride, and storytelling, Mariachi San Luis brings this treasured art form to life, sharing melodies that have echoed through generations across the American Southwest and beyond.

Los Vecinos Baildores feature couple dancing that originated in Spain and have withstood the test of time in the San Luis Valley. The couples perform several old dances like the Broom Dance and La Marcha de los Novios.

Los Semillas de la Tierra perform a variety of traditional dances in full costumes from various regions of Mexico, was started by Patsy and Herman Martinez in 1972, and is now led by Domingo Estrada.

Admission is free to this event, although regular park entrance fees apply.
