Canyon De Chelly National Monument

Canyon De Chelly
For nearly five thousand years, people have lived in these canyons—longer than anyone has continuously lived on the Colorado Plateau. Today, some Navajo families live in the canyon, farming caring for their land. The National Park Service and the Navajo Nation work together to manage the canyon's resources.

Nestled in northeastern Arizona, this awe-inspiring canyon has been home to Indigenous peoples for thousands of years. Today, the Navajo Nation continues to live and farm within its towering sandstone walls. Sheer cliffs, ancient cliff dwellings, and sacred rock art tell the stories of past civilizations, while scenic overlooks and guided tours offer unforgettable views. Whether exploring by foot, horseback, or jeep, visitors can experience the canyon’s breathtaking landscapes and rich cultural heritage in a truly immersive way.
