Amistad National Recreation Area

Desert landscape with blue lake, greenery, and clear sky.
Just three hours outside San Antonio, sheer cliffs rise above glimmering waters in a landscape shaped by time and resilience. For thousands of years, communities have flourished where the Rio Grande, Devils River, and Pecos River meet—an unexpected oasis tucked into the Texas borderlands.

Known for its sparkling waters and wide range of recreation opportunities, Amistad National Recreation Area sits along the Texas–Mexico border as an international destination for adventure. Visitors can boat, fish, hunt, hike, and camp, and at certain times of year, witness the remarkable monarch butterfly migration. People first arrived in these canyonlands nearly 12,000 years ago to hunt ice age mammals and fish the clear rivers. Today, you can view 4,000-year-old pictographs and discover how this landscape influenced Westward expansion and the development of the railroad.
