San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

San Antonio Missions
The San Antonio Missions demonstrate the interweaving of the cultures of the Spanish and the Indigenous peoples of what is now South Texas. Facing European diseases, colonization, and environmental changes, many Indigenous people in the early 1700s accepted a new religion and agrarian lifestyle in hopes of survival. Today, this UNESCO World Heritage Site tells the stories of the establishment of the missions and the impact they had on the lives and cultures of the people who inhabited them and their descendants, who are still alive today.

Discover San Antonio Missions National Historical Park

San Antonio Missions photo

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park preserves four of the five Spanish colonial missions that shaped the history and culture of Texas. Established in the 18th century, these missions—Concepción, San José, San Juan, and Espada—served as centers of faith, farming, and community for Indigenous peoples and Spanish settlers. Today, visitors can explore beautifully preserved churches, walk peaceful courtyards, and learn about the blending of Spanish and Native American traditions. With its rich history, stunning architecture, and connection to San Antonio’s vibrant heritage, this UNESCO World Heritage Site offers a fascinating journey into the past.
